Science on the Move….Sideways

As you know, one of my pet peeves is how the scientific community presents ideas and concepts to the public with the certitude of established fact when they they're well aware it's not. This mind game has been played on many fronts including evolution, medicine, biology, astrophysics and so many more. Remember when eggs were bad for you? Were they truly honest, they'd preface these kinds of statements with, "We believe," "Hypothetically," "If the theory is correct" and so on. "If dark matter proves to be real, then...." Yet they criticize others for making the same kinds of unfounded statements. Here's a couple examples of recent debunks:

1). "Europe has milder winters than those in the Western Hemisphere at the same latitudes because of the Gulf Stream effect bringing warmer waters north." FALSE. This was pure speculation that was adopted as fact for decades. FACT: Recent studies have now shown that other factors such as the Jet Stream are responsible; the Gulf Stream plays no significant role. Even basic physics has found that heat held in water cannot be easily transferred to a poor thermal conductor like air, let alone having a relatively small flow of slightly warmer water heat an entire continent. With this myth falls one of the dire warnings of global warming that melting Arctic ice will push the warmer water of the Gulf Stream south thereby making Europe colder (on the other hand, the basic physics of losing land mass to rising sea levels from melting ice is all too real).

2). "Antioxidants slow aging by reducing free radicals in cells." Not only FALSE, but DANGEROUS! This is another decades-old assumption that was adopted as fact and trumpeted by the medical field, with vitamin and supplement mfrs jumping on the bandwagon with antioxidant products the public greedily consumes. FACT: Numerous studies have now shown that not only did the elimination of free radicals not increase life span, but in some cases the free-radical reduction of antioxidants has the opposite effect of causing premature death!!!! A working hypothesis is now that the rise in free radicals triggers some as yet discovered defense mechanism in the body that protects it and can even prolong life, something like the loose metaphor that a piece of dirt in an oyster is what allows the formation of a pearl. The link between free radicals and aging that's been fed to us for so long has now been debunked. Anyone out there who takes antioxidants in the false belief that it somehow slows aging should stop--you may actually be killing yourself.

Has anyone read about these in the mainstream media?

A four-part series of interviews with co-guest David Rountree was recorded back in February on Randy Plessor’s Ghostly Excavations has finally been posted. When they were originally recorded, the show was on Paramainia Network. When the show left Paramania and moved to Ztalk Radio Network, GE’s archive page was removed. Now that the show is established on Ztalk, the interviews have been posted on their archive pages. Go to http://ztalkradio.com/show-archives/ and scroll down to Ghostly Excavations Show, click on the show name, then scroll down to the four “Fusco and Rountree” entries. There is about three hours of interview between the four parts.

Warning: these interviews are not for the faint of heart. Those who think paranormal investigating is for entertainment, thrill seeking, ego trips or publicity seeking will not like them. They are a serious, hard-hitting look at the present state of paranormal research as it relates to a scientific approach, and is covered with a degree of candidness and detail perhaps never before achieved on talk radio. Approaches and attitudes that hinder the advancement of this field by encouraging the above, perpetuating myth and mystique and even perpetrating fraud are identified and harshly criticized. Of particular note to those investigators who are serious about a scientific approach are David’s explanations on how to organize a solid investigation team and setup a truly scientifically valid experimental environment in the field, both which are presented in unprecedented detail. If you’re serious about science and the paranormal, these interviews are a must-listen.
